A Dhaka court has denied bail to 27 people arrested following a police raid on the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) headquarters in Gulistan.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter rejected their bail petitions after a hearing on Monday, according to Sub-Inspector Masum Mia of the prosecution police.
“The matter needs to be investigated,” the judge said.
Police had detained hundreds of people during Saturday’s raid on the JaSaD office before releasing 249 following identity checks. The 27 were formally arrested and sent to jail.
Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Nazmul Islam had petitioned the court on Sunday to keep them in custody.
The petition alleged that the 27 created an “unstable and disorderly situation” inside JaSaD’s central office by chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans.
Police said they could not provide “satisfactory answers” when questioned about why they were at the office.
The court sent the 27 to jail on Sunday and scheduled their bail hearing for Monday.
The 27 are Didarul Alam Tuhin, Iman Ahmed Imon, Molla Md Shahjahan Siraj, Joy Sarkar, Miraj Ahmed, Miraj Malitha, Rabiul Islam, Milon Kumar Mahanta, Kawsar Hossain, Sri Anjan Shil, Jalal Uddin Mondol, Abdul Latif, Shamim Ahmed, Ahmed Ahsan Habib, Sujan Ali, Tasikul Islam, Saifullah Sayek, Nayan Ali, Sajidul Islam Tuhin, Tajul Islam, Nishkar Samrat Hossain Talukder, Anwar Hossain, Alamgir Hossain, Al Amin Hawlader, Tushar Ali, Rasidul Haque and Mir Muktisur Rahman.
What Happened on Saturday
Police raided the JaSaD headquarters on Saturday afternoon after receiving information that members of the Awami League, whose political activities are banned, had gathered there.
Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Harun Or Rashid said police had information that JaSaD members and people affiliated with the Awami League had gathered with the intention of carrying out “sabotage” or for some other “malicious purpose”.
Police also said they had received reports of “Joy Bangla” slogans being chanted.
JaSaD disputed the police account, saying it was holding a representatives’ meeting involving party leaders from across the country after informing the authorities and obtaining written permission.
JaSaD Office Secretary Sajjad Hossain also alleged that activists of the ruling BNP and its youth affiliate Jubo Dal had entered and attacked the office before police began detaining JaSaD leaders and activists.
There was no immediate comment from the BNP or Jubo Dal on the allegation.
Dhaka South Jubo Dal Member Secretary Rabiul Islam Nayan was seen at the scene alleging that Awami League leaders and activists were holding a “secret meeting” inside.
JaSaD denied the allegation, saying no Awami League leaders or activists were present.
