Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged the public to remain vigilant, warning that certain quarters are trying to instigate "anarchy" across the country to sabotage the government's development initiatives and disrupt the rule of law.
He made the call on Saturday afternoon while inaugurating the re-excavation of the 'Dharar Khal' in Mymensingh’s Trishal.
Reflecting on the recent rape and brutal murder of a child named Ramisa Akter in Dhaka, the premier said the government is fully committed to ensuring justice following proper judicial channels.
"We want to establish the rule of law. Every action must follow a set of rules and procedures," Tarique said, criticising recent street blockades and vandalism.
"Over the last few days, we have noticed some people attempting to create a chaotic situation by blocking roads, halting vehicular movement, and setting fires. Do these actions not obstruct the rule of law?"
The premier pointed out that those inciting unrest never speak about farmers' rights, employment, canal excavations, or the fact that rural children walk barefoot to school.
Warning the public of the consequences of lawlessness, he added: "If an anarchic situation is created, this nationwide canal-digging initiative will stop.”
“Who will be affected? The working-class people of the villages. Distribution of agricultural inputs will stall, honorariums for religious leaders of all faiths will stop, and our plans to provide new school uniforms and bags to rural children will be thwarted," he said.
Stressing that the country's 200 million people must work together to rebuild the nation, Tarique said the BNP's plans are entirely centred around human development and economic self-reliance.
He urged citizens to protect these plans from being derailed by “conspirators”.
The prime minister earlier unveiled a plaque at the canal site, formally inaugurated the project by digging soil with a spade, and planted a palmyra sapling along the canal bank.
