Election officials have arrived at the parliament complex with voting materials as Bangladesh prepares to hold a presidential election by ballot for the first time in three and a half decades.
A 20-member team of Election Commission officials reached parliament around 12:15pm on Thursday, ahead of voting scheduled to take place in the chamber from 2pm to 5pm.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will serve as the election officer, assisted by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed and 20 officials from the EC Secretariat. The Parliament Secretariat will also provide logistical support.
Earlier in the morning, Akhtar chaired a preparatory meeting at the EC headquarters to review the voting procedure and the responsibilities of officials assigned to the election.
“The secretary briefed us on the duties of the officials assisting with the presidential election, how the votes will be cast and the timeframe for completing the process,” EC Joint Secretary Moin Uddin Khan said after the meeting.
The presidential election follows the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin on Jul 24 on grounds of serious illness.
The EC announced the election schedule on Aug 6 to fill the vacant office.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is running as the candidate of the ruling BNP and its allies, while Liberal Democratic Party President Oli Ahmad has entered the race as the nominee of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance.
