BNP leaders and activists have marked the 47th founding anniversary of the party with programmes across the country, including in Dhaka, paying tribute to the party’s founder, Ziaur Rahman.
Several thousand leaders and supporters, led by the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, placed wreaths at Ziaur Rahman’s grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 11am on Monday.
Leaders and activists from different wards of Dhaka marched in processions toward the site, where a large crowd gathered around the mausoleum to commemorate the occasion.
Among those present were BNP National Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council Member Amanullah Aman, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and others.
After laying the wreaths, the leaders offered a special prayer seeking forgiveness for the soul of the late president.
The BNP, founded on Sept 1, 1978, began its anniversary programmes early on Monday by hoisting the party and national flags at its central office in Naya Paltan, at the chairperson’s office in Gulshan, and at BNP offices across the country.
The six-day programme to mark the anniversary began on Sunday with a discussion at the Institution of Engineers auditorium in Ramna.
On Tuesday, a procession is scheduled to set off from the Naya Paltan office at 2pm.
On Sept 3, processions and discussions will be held in Upazilas and municipalities across the country.
The following day will feature tree planting, fish releases, free medical camps, and sports programmes in metropolitan cities, districts and Upazilas.
A roundtable discussion in Dhaka will conclude the programmes on Sept 5.
To mark the anniversary, BNP has also released posters and special supplements in national newspapers.
