Jamaat-e-Islami’s deputy chief Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher has said the party will not field a candidate in Barishal-6, the constituency where Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Faizul Karim is contesting.
He made the statement on Sunday night at a meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh announced on Friday that it was leaving the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, citing a failure to reach consensus on electoral seat-sharing.
Faizul is contesting in the Barishal-5 (Sadar-city) and Barishal-6 (Bakerganj) constituencies.
Jamaat said it will withdraw Mahmudunnabi, secretary of Jamaat’s Barishal unit, from Barishal-6.
However, Islami Andolon Bangladesh has indicated that it will not take the announcement into consideration.
Reacting to the development, the party’s Assistant Secretary General Ahmad Abdul Qaiyum told bdnews24.com: “There is nothing to be done with such concessions now,” using an idiom to highlight the insignificance of the compensation.
