Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that while law and order has visibly improved during the BNP government’s first six months in power, further time is needed to meet public expectations.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the Ministry of Finance on Monday, he noted that satisfaction with law and order is ultimately for citizens to judge.
“We believe we have achieved improvements, but to reach the level people expect, more time is required,” he said.
Salahuddin said the government had undertaken several reforms during its first six months and that a number of initiatives relating to law and order had been praised.
“We have only completed six months. During this period, we have been able to carry out many reforms, and you have seen many commendable initiatives in maintaining law and order,” he said.
“We hope that the initiatives implemented by the government and those we have started within these 180 days will be appreciated.”
The minister also highlighted what he described as the government's successful handling of several crises under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's leadership.
He cited the global disruption to fuel and gas supplies caused by the war in the Middle East, saying Bangladesh was also affected by the crisis.
“But we did not increase the price of fuel oil for a full month,” Salahuddin said.
The government later raised fuel prices to a “tolerable” level after the Boro rice-growing season had ended, he said.
