Veteran AL politician Engineer Mosharraf Hossain dies

Veteran Awami League politician and freedom fighter Engineer Mosharraf Hossain has died while undergoing medical treatment.

He passed away at Dhaka’s Square Hospital at 10:20am on Wednesday, said Niaz Mormed Elite, a central Jubo League leader and voter in Mosharraf’s constituency. He was 83.

Mosharraf had been arrested in Dhaka’s Vatara Thana area on Oct 27, 2024, after the fall of the Awami League government. He was later taken to Chittagong Central Jail and received division privileges, according to the prison rules.

The veteran politician was suffering from various diseases and was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital once in February, 2025.

At the time, the hospital’s Director Brig Gen Taslim Uddin said: “He is an elderly person. He has multiple diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and dementia.

The following year, on Aug 5, 2025, he fell seriously ill due to old age complications and was admitted to Bangladesh Medical University Hospital from the prison hospital. He was released on bail on Aug 14.

Several cases were pending against the former minister in Dhaka and Chattogram.

Mosharraf was born on Jan 12, 1943.

He was elected as a member of parliament from the Chattogram-1 constituency for seven terms in 1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014, and 2018 as an Awami League candidate. The politician was also one of the framers of the 1972 Constitution.

He also served as the minister of civil aviation and tourism and the minister of housing and public works.

In the 2024 election, his son Mahbub Rahman Ruhel was elected as a member of parliament from the same constituency.

Until his death, Mosharraf was a member of the Awami League Presidium.
