The Election Commission (EC) has reported a turnout of 47.91 percent by 2pm across 36,031 polling centres in Bangladesh’s national election.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told a briefing at 4:15pm that results from 6,620 centres were still pending.

He noted that turnout appeared slower at midday but picked up later in the afternoon.

Akhtar acknowledged complaints of irregularities at some centres, saying votes could be suspended in affected constituencies if allegations are substantiated.

“It should not be said in advance, as that would mislead people. Complaints must be examined and returning officers will act accordingly,” he said.

Bangladesh has 127.7 million registered voters, including 64.8 million men, 62.9 million women and 1,232 hijra voters.

A total of 2,028 candidates are contesting across 299 constituencies.
