The Election Commission (EC) has warned against any government staff campaigning for either a “Yes” or “No” vote in the referendum.

The EC sent a directive to all returning officers on Thursday, saying taking sides would constitute a “punishable offence” under the Referendum Ordinance and the Representation of the People Order.

It also asked government staff not to influence the election.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the cabinet and the principal secretaries to the chief advisor, and other concerned officers.

The referendum is scheduled to be held on Feb 12 alongside the parliamentary polls.
