Rout in Rangpur stronghold for Jatiya Party as Jamaat seals five seats, NCP one

GM Quader finishes third in Rangpur-3 as Jatiya Party fails in their traditional fortress

The Jatiya Party has suffered a comprehensive defeat in Rangpur, losing all six parliamentary seats in a region long regarded as its political heartland.

Party Chairman GM Quader finished third in Rangpur-3 (City Corporation and Sadar), underscoring the scale of the setback in what was once a reliable stronghold for the party founded by former military ruler HM Ershad.

Of the six constituencies in Rangpur district, Jamaat-e-Islami won five, while the National Citizen Party (NCP) secured the remaining seat.

The BNP failed to win any seat, though its candidates finished second in all six constituencies, in several cases by relatively narrow margins.

In Rangpur-1, Jamaat candidate Raihan Siraji won with 174,245 votes, defeating BNP’s Mokarram Hossain Sujan, who polled 69,131.

ATM Azharul Islam of Jamaat secured Rangpur-2 with 135,556 votes, while BNP candidate Mohammad Ali Sarkar finished second with 80,538.

In Rangpur-3, Jamaat’s Mahbubur Rahman Belal won with 175,827 votes, followed by BNP’s Shamsuzzaman Samu with 84,578.

GM Quader came third. He had been elected from this seat in 2024 and later served as leader of the opposition.

The lone non-Jamaat victory came in Rangpur-4, where NCP’s Akhter Hossen won with 149,966 votes, narrowly ahead of BNP candidate Emdadul Haque Varosha, who received 140,564.

In Rangpur-5, Jamaat’s Golam Rabbani secured 176,411 votes, defeating BNP contender Golam Rabbani, who polled 115,116.

Nurul Amin of Jamaat won Rangpur-6 with 120,128 votes, edging past BNP’s Saiful Islam, who received 117,703.
