At least 23 people have been injured in clashes between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Meherpur’s Mujibnagar and Gangni Upazilas amid allegations of obstructing voters from going to polling stations.

The violence began on Thursday morning spread across two locations, prompting intervention by law-enforcing agencies and security forces.

According to police, a clash broke out around 9:30am about 100 yards from a polling station in Joypur village under Mujibnagar Upazila.

The confrontation between BNP and Jamaat supporters left five people injured.

Mujibnagar Police Station chief Zahidul Islam said police responded swiftly after receiving reports of the incident.

“Upon receiving information about the clash between BNP and Jamaat, the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Three Jamaat supporters were arrested from the spot and taken to the police station. The situation is currently calm, and voting is going on without any problems,” he said.

Later the same day, another clash erupted in Saharbati village of Gangni Upazila, reportedly over attempts to block individuals from going to the polling station.

Ten more people were injured in that incident.

Gangni Police Station chief Uttam Kumar Das said the situation had since stabilised.

“The situation is currently under control. Those injured in the clash are receiving treatment at various hospitals. Police, RAB, BGB and army are deployed at the spot,” he said.
