New Age editor Nurul Kabir hass been booed and assaulted outside The Daily Star office in Dhaka after he went there to speak to a crowd that has been vandalising the newspaper’s premises and setting fire to the building.

In a video of the incident, which occurred around 2am on Friday and was filmed in the presence of the Army, the mob can be seen pushing Kabir, grabbing him by the collar, and shouting that he is an “Awami League agent” and a “civil society agent.”

The footage spread rapidly online, triggering widespread outrage on social media.

Dhaka has seen extensive vandalism and some arson attacks since news broke that Sharif Osman bin Hadi had died. Hadi breathed his last in Singapore on Thursday night while undergoing treatment there.

Both The Daily Star and Prothom Alo came under attack, with reports that a number of journalists remain trapped inside The Daily Star building.

Hadi was shot on Dec 12, a day after the election commission announced the timetable for the next parliamentary election.
