Somoy Media Limited, the owning company of the private TV station Somoy TV, has announced a change in its top management.

Managing Director Ahmed Jobaer has been sacked and replaced by Shampa Rahman.

The decision was made during a meeting of the board of directors held at City House in Gulshan on Saturday.

Jobaer told bdnews24.com, "The licence for Somoy Television is in my name. According to regulations, the person in whose name the licence is issued must be in charge of the main operations."

He expressed concerns about attempts to take over the channel and indicated plans to challenge the decision in court once normalcy returns and legal proceedings resume.

The channel's online portal described the board meeting as an "illegal board meeting”.

The statement notes, “A certain group is spreading news about the removal of Somoy Television’s MD and CEO through an illegal board meeting, which is not true.”

“The licence for Somoy Television is in the name of the current MD, so there is no opportunity to remove him.”
