Bangladesh has recorded four deaths from dengue, as well as 1,163 more hospitalisations with the disease – the highest single-day hospitalisation figure recorded this year.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its bulletin that 97 people have died of dengue so far this year, including the four latest deaths recorded in 24 hours until 8am on Monday.
It also cited the previous highest daily admission figure from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease at 1,097.
The highest number of dengue deaths in a single month has been recorded in August, with 43 fatalities. In July, 36 people died of the disease.
A total of 20,536 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals this month, more than double of July’s 9,206.
August’s hospitalisation figure is also higher than the combined total recorded during the first seven months of the year.
Of the latest hospital admissions, 182 were reported in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 123 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Another 159 patients were admitted to hospitals elsewhere in Dhaka Division.
Outside Dhaka, 132 patients were admitted in the Barishal Division, 120 in Chattogram, 283 in Khulna, 69 in Mymensingh, 87 in Rajshahi, seven in Rangpur, and one in Sylhet.
A total of 1,117 patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours.
According to the health directorate, 35,846 people have been hospitalised with dengue across Bangladesh since Jan 1. Of them, 33,205 have recovered and been discharged.
The health directorate has maintained records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.
In 2023, 321,179 people were hospitalised with dengue, the highest annual figure on record. That year also saw the country's highest number of dengue deaths, at 1,705.
Last year, more than 400 people died of dengue, while around 120,000 cases were recorded.
