BSMMU gets Prof Shahana Akther as its first female pro-vice chancellor

The government has appointed Professor Shahana Akther Rahman pro-vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University or BSMMU.

The chairman of paediatrics department is the first woman to hold the post at Bangladesh’s first medical university.

It said in a media release that Prof Akhter joined her new office on Wednesday, a day after President Md Abdul Hamid, the chancellor of the university, made the appointment for three years.

Completing MBBS in Dhaka Medical College in 1982 and FCPS (paediatrics) in 1990, she did her master’s in medical education from the UK in 1995.

Wife of former Bangladesh Bank governor and currently Dhaka University teacher Atiur Rahman, Prof Akhter is a pioneer in child rheumatology in Bangladesh, the release said.
