Bangladesh reports three more dengue deaths as toll climbs to 37 this year

Nearly half of this year's fatalities have been recorded in 19 days of July

Bangladesh has recorded three more deaths from dengue in a 24-hour count, while 372 new patients have been admitted to hospitals.

The latest fatalities have pushed this year's death toll to 37, including 19 recorded in the first 19 days of July, health authorities said on Monday

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 22 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka North City and 52 in Dhaka South City during the 24 hours to 8am on Sunday.

Another 103 patients were admitted to hospitals across the rest of Dhaka Division.

Barishal Division recorded 67 new admissions, followed by Chattogram with 54, Khulna 43, Mymensingh 21, Rangpur six and Rajshahi four.

A further 346 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals during the reporting period.

Since Jan 1, as many as 10,857 dengue patients have been hospitalised nationwide.

Of them, 9,786 have recovered and been discharged, according to the health directorate.

The DGHS has tracked dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. The deadliest outbreak came in 2023, when 321,179 people were hospitalised and 1,705 died.

More than 400 people died from dengue last year, while hospital admissions exceeded 100,000.
