“Mirzapur” has returned — but not with Season 4.

The hit Prime Video crime franchise makes its theatrical debut on Friday with “Mirzapur: The Movie”, bringing Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi to cinemas while returning to a part of the story first seen eight years ago.

That raises an obvious question: how can Munna and several other characters who later died in the series be back?

The answer lies in the timeline.

“Mirzapur: The Movie” is not a continuation of Season 3. Instead, it inserts a new story into the first season, allowing familiar characters to return without rewriting what happened to them later.

Where Does the Movie Fit in the “Mirzapur” Timeline?

The first season introduced viewers to the criminal empire run by Akhandanand “Kaleen” Tripathi, played by Pankaj Tripathi, and the Pandit brothers Guddu and Bablu, played by Ali Fazal and Vikrant Massey.

The film returns to that earlier period.

Harshita Gaur, who plays Dimpy Pandit, told Indian Express that the new story occupies a space between Episodes 6 and 7 of Season 1 before reconnecting with events viewers already know.

That effectively makes the movie an additional chapter within the existing chronology rather than a sequel to the latest season.

So How is Munna Back?

Divyenndu returns as Munna Tripathi, one of the franchise’s most popular characters.

Because the movie takes place earlier in the “Mirzapur” timeline, his return does not undo his later fate in the series.

The same device brings back other familiar Season 1 characters, including Sweety Gupta, played by Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Compounder, played by Abhishek Banerjee.

Pankaj Tripathi returns as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit and Shweta Tripathi Sharma as Golu Gupta.

Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang, Harshita Gaur, Sheeba Chadha and Kulbhushan Kharbanda are also back.

What Happened to Bablu Pandit?

Bablu returns too — but with a new face.

Jitendra Kumar takes over as Guddu’s younger brother, replacing Vikrant Massey, who played the character in Season 1.

Ravi Kishan, Mohit Malik, Sonal Chauhan and Sushant Singh are among the other additions to the cast.

Do You Need to Watch All Three Seasons First?

The filmmakers say no.

The movie tells a standalone story within the first-season timeline and has been designed so that viewers unfamiliar with the streaming series can follow it.

The makers have also said the film fills in gaps for established fans, connecting events in its new story with moments already seen in the series.

For viewers looking for a refresher, the first six episodes of Season 1 provide the most immediate background.

Why Turn 'Mirzapur' into a Movie?

The answer extends beyond the story itself.

“Mirzapur” is one of India’s biggest streaming franchises. Indian Express reports that its third season was India’s most-watched original streaming series in 2024, drawing more than 30 million streams.

It also reached Prime Video’s Top 10 in more than 85 countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Taking the franchise to cinemas therefore poses a different test: whether an audience accustomed to watching “Mirzapur” at home will pay to enter the same universe on the big screen.

Producer Farhan Akhtar has said demand from fans helped drive the decision to take the franchise to theatres.

Advance bookings suggested substantial interest. Indian Express reported ahead of release that the film had sold more than 211,000 tickets across over 10,000 shows, with bookings worth Rs 96 million including blocked seats.

The question now is whether that established streaming audience can translate into sustained theatrical demand.

“Mirzapur: The Movie” is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by series creator Puneet Krishna.

It opened in Indian cinemas on Sept 4.
