Farida Parveen, the celebrated Lalon Sain singer whose voice touched millions over five decades, has died at the age of 71.
She breathed her last at 10:15pm on Saturday in the intensive care unit of Universal Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, where she had been admitted on Sept 2 due to serious health concerns.
Initially placed in intensive care, Parveen was later put on life support.
Ashish Kumar Chakraborty, the hospital’s managing director, confirmed her death.
Her death marks the end of an era in Bengali folk music.
Farida was admitted to the hospital in Mohakhali due to her critical condition. She was immediately transferred to intensive care upon arrival.
She had been suffering from multiple health issues for some time, including kidney problems and diabetes. She was undergoing kidney dialysis twice a week. This year, she was admitted to the hospital three times for treatment.
After her recent hospitalisation, a six-member medical board was formed to oversee her treatment.
Ashish said, “Farida Parveen had been struggling with kidney complications for a long time. Recently, her condition worsened to the point where she required dialysis twice a week.
He said Farida was brought to the hospital for dialysis. “After dialysis, her condition deteriorated, and the doctors recommended that she be admitted to the hospital.”
"She had been receiving treatment in the ICU since then. On Wednesday, when her condition declined, the decision to put her on a ventilator came.”
On Friday, Ashish had told bdnews24.com that her condition had not improved, and she was in no condition to be flown abroad for advanced treatment.
He said, “Farida’s blood pressure had increased slightly, but her hemoglobin levels were very low, internal bleeding had not stopped, and her consciousness was dim.”
At the hospital, Farida’s eldest son Imam Nahil said around 12:30am, “Farida will be taken to her residence in Tejkuni Para at 1:30am. From there, she will be taken to the [Central] Shaheed Minar between 10:30am and 11:30am to pay respects.
“After that, the first funeral prayer will be held before the Zuhr prayer at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University. She will then be laid to rest at her parents’ grave in Kushtia.”
Farida’s husband, Gazi Abdul Hakim said she will be buried in Kushtia in line with the wishes of their children.
“We seek prayers from the people of the country for Farida. She was the only one who carried the legacy of Lalon," he said.
