A Dhaka court has handed down arrest warrants against film actress Rubina Akter Nijhum, her husband Mamunur Rashid Rahul, her brother Nannu Mia and sister Mahima Bibi in a case filed over alleged financial fraud.
Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi issued the warrants on Wednesday.
The case was lodged on Jan 29 by a woman named Suravi Begum. The court on that day summoned the suspects to appear on Feb 19.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Kayes Ahmed Arnob said the suspects failed to appear in court on Wednesday, prompting the prosecution to seek arrest warrants, which the court granted.
According to the case statement, Suravi was previously acquainted with Nijhum and Rahul, and they once had a relationship based on “trust”.
On that basis, on Oct 1, 2020, Nijhum and Rahul borrowed Tk 1.25 million from Suravi.
Between Oct 11 and Oct 20 that year, she handed over the amount in three instalments under a written agreement requiring repayment within two months.
The agreement said if Rahul failed to repay the money or died, his brother Nannu would be responsible for settling the amount.
