Education boards in Bangladesh have proposed that applications for Class 11 admission at the higher secondary level for students who passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations commence on Sept 15.
As in previous years, college admission applications will be accepted in three phases, with classes scheduled to begin in November.
Admissions to colleges and madrasas in Class 11 will again be conducted based on the results of the SSC and equivalent examinations.
Officials fear that around 750,000 seats will remain vacant across colleges and madrasas once the admission process concludes.
Prof Syed Akhtaruzzaman, president of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee, told bdnews24.com on Thursday: "We have submitted a draft policy to the ministry, proposing to start receiving applications from Sept 15.
“The first phase of applications is expected to run until Oct 1. We have also proposed wrapping up the admission process by Nov 10, with classes commencing on Nov 12."
"However, these dates are not final," Prof Akhtaruzzaman, also the chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, added.
"The ministry wants to bring the class start date forward slightly. As in previous years, it will finalise the dates for accepting applications, publishing results, completing admissions, and commencing classes before issuing the official admission policy.
"The schedule will be confirmed once the policy is issued."
He noted that applications will be processed centrally online, and students will be selected for admission to institutions according to their preference list and the marks obtained in their SSC and equivalent exams.
The results of the SSC and equivalent examinations were published on Aug 10.
Over 1.8 million candidates took the examinations under 11 education boards this year, of whom 1.1 million passed. More than 690,000 students failed to clear the exams.
Colleges and madrasas across the country offer nearly 2.5 million seats in Class 11.
This central admission process will cover higher secondary colleges and madrasas, vocational and technical institutions will manage their admissions separately.
