In a reversal of decision, the government has announced that Eid holidays in more than 65,000 government primary schools across the country will begin from Saturday.
Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Public Relations Officer Tanvir Mia confirmed the development after 9pm on Friday.
“Eid holidays in government primary schools will begin from May 23. The institutions will remain closed until Jun 6, a Saturday.”
Earlier, under an order issued on Mar 24, the Directorate of Primary Education had directed that schools remain open for the 10 Saturdays following the resumption of classes after Ramadan and Eid holidays.
The move was taken to address learning gaps caused by the month-long closure during Ramadan.
Although Eid holidays had already begun in secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutions, primary schools were initially scheduled to remain open on Saturday, May 23, in line with the earlier directive, Primary and Mass Education State Minister Bobby Hajjaj had said.
However, primary school teachers later submitted a written request to the primary education directorate to seek closure on the Saturday before Eid.
Eid holidays for all government and private primary and secondary schools, colleges and technical institutions will continue until Jun 4, a Thursday.
