The Bangladesh government has formed a cabinet committee to develop a crisis management plan to maintain economic stability in the country amid concerns over a global energy crisis and threats to the world economy following the US and Israeli war with Iran.
The finance minister will preside over the seven-minister committee.
A notice announcing the formation of the committee was issued on Monday.
The members of the committee include the minister of local government, rural development and cooperatives; the minister of home affairs; the minister of power, energy and mineral resources; the minister of commerce; the minister of expatriates' welfare and overseas employment, and the minister of food.
The committee's terms of reference have also been determined in the notice.
It said that the committee will analyse the war situations in different countries across the world and determine the possible impact on Bangladesh. In addition, the committee will formulate the necessary crisis management plan to maintain the country's economic stability.
The committee may co-opt additional members if necessary and meetings will be held as needed.
The notice also says the Finance Division will provide secretarial support to the committee.
The recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran have led to the largest jump in oil prices since the unrest caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
As Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, oil-rich countries in the Persian Gulf have reduced production, leading to an oil supply crisis in the global market.
