The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched its e-return service for individual taxpayers for the 2026-27 tax year, allowing returns to be filed online from the first quarter of the fiscal year.
On Wednesday, the NBR announced the rollout, enabling taxpayers to submit income tax returns online immediately.
The revenue authority said the move is part of efforts to make tax services “simpler, faster and more transparent”.
Taxpayers can now prepare and submit their annual returns from home.
From the 2026-27 tax year, individuals who file returns between July and September will receive a rebate of 5 percent of their net tax payable, capped at Tk 25,000.
Only returns filed during that period will qualify for the incentive.
Returns submitted later will not be eligible, while those filed after December will attract additional tax.
The NBR has urged taxpayers to submit their returns on time to benefit from the scheme.
The online filing system, introduced in 2021, has gained widespread acceptance among taxpayers.
In the 2025-26 tax year, a record 4.7 million individual taxpayers filed returns through the e-return system.
The NBR has again made online filing mandatory for individual taxpayers through a special order, as it did in the previous tax year.
Taxpayers aged 65 or above, physically challenged or persons with disabilities upon submitting supporting documents, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh, however, will be allowed to submit paper returns instead.
Other individual taxpayers who cannot file online because of e-return registration problems may also submit paper returns with approval from the additional or joint commissioner of taxes.
Through the www.etaxnbr.gov.bd platform, taxpayers can pay taxes from home using bank transfer, debit card, credit card, bKash, Rocket, Nagad or other mobile financial services.
They can also submit returns with accurate information and instantly receive acknowledgement slips and income tax certificates.
The NBR said officials will provide assistance through its call centre 09643717171 and other electronic platforms during office hours, excluding public holidays, for taxpayers facing difficulties with online filing.
