Former captain Tamim Iqbal has secured a commanding mandate in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election, winning 73 of 74 votes in Category 2 -- the highest among all candidates.
Following the result, he was elected unopposed as BCB president, becoming the 21st chief of the board.
Fahim Sinha was also elected vice-president unopposed.
He had served as a director during Nazmul Hassan Papon’s tenure as board president, and also maintained the position under the board subsequently led by Faruque Ahmed.
According to the constitution, the board should have two vice-presidents.
Tamim, however, clarified during the media briefing that, with the unanimous consent of the board directors, only one vice-president is being retained for the time being.
An election for the second position may be conducted later.
Voting for the director positions took place on Sunday at the BCB headquarters inside the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, running from 10am until 4pm.
The overall election lacked a highly competitive atmosphere, as eight directors had already been elected unopposed before the balloting.
All eight of those uncontested individuals were representatives from Category-1, which comprises regional and district sports associations.
The primary battle of the election took place in Category-2, which features club representatives.
As many as 16 candidates were in the running for 12 available director seats.
It was in this segment that Tamim, the councillor representing the Old DOHS Sports Club, secured a resounding victory by claiming 73 out of the 74 total votes cast.
