Australia captain Pat Cummins has offered “no excuses” for his side’s historic defeat by Bangladesh in Darwin and suggested changes could be considered for the second Test in Mackay.
Bangladesh completed a nine-wicket victory shortly before tea on day four on Sunday, securing their first Test win on Australian soil and taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
The visitors dominated much of the contest after Australia were dismissed for 198 on the opening day, before responding with 426 to establish a commanding 228-run first-innings lead.
Cummins defended Australia’s preparation but conceded his side had been comprehensively beaten.
“I thought our preparation was pretty much spot-on. I thought it was excellent, so, yeah, no excuses,” Cummins is quoted as saying at the post-match presentation by ESPNCricinfo.
“They [Bangladesh] played really well. I thought the day one wicket, [there was] a little bit [in it] early but obviously [we've] got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then just couldn't penetrate with the ball.”
Cummins had opted to bat after winning the toss, a decision likely to face scrutiny after Bangladesh’s seamers exploited the early conditions to dismiss Australia cheaply.
“They outplayed us in all facets. I thought they were really patient and quite disciplined. Once we were behind, it was really hard to get back.”
