A Dhaka court has ordered the attachment of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan's assets in a case involving the dishonour of a cheque worth Tk 40 million.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the order on Monday following a petition from the plaintiff.

The case was filed on Dec 15, 2023, by IFIC Bank’s Relationship Officer Md Shahibur Rahman against Shakib and three others, including his company Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd. The other accused are the company's Managing Director Gazi Shahagir Hossain, and directors Imdadul Haque and Malaika Begum.

The accused had been summoned by the court on Jan 19, when Imdadul surrendered and secured bail. However, Shakib and Gazi Shahagir failed to appear, leading the court to issue arrest warrants against them.

A report on the execution of these arrest warrants was scheduled for Mar 24. In the meantime, Gazi Shahagir surrendered and was granted bail.

Since Shakib, who is currently abroad, neither surrendered nor could be arrested, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Rafi Ahsan, petitioned for the seizure of his assets. Following a hearing, the court approved the request.

Reports suggest that Malaika Begum has recently passed away, though the official death certificate has yet to be submitted to the court.

According to the lawsuit, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm took out a Tk 25 million loan from IFIC Bank’s Banani branch in 2017 -- Tk 10 million as working capital and Tk 15 million as a term loan. Since the working capital loan was not repaid on time, the bank converted it into a term loan.

In the face of multiple repayment notices, Shakib’s company issued two cheques worth Tk 41.4 million on Sept 4, 2023. However, due to insufficient funds, the cheques bounced.

Later, IFIC Bank’s Banani branch issued a legal notice through a national newspaper under the Negotiable Instruments Act. After receiving no response within 30 days, the bank initiated legal proceedings against the accused.
