Vice-Chancellor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury announced the decision after a meeting of provosts and proctorial body on Wednesday.

The date of the long-awaited polls has not been fixed, he said.

“The CUCSU election date will be finalised after completing some procedures,” he told bdnews24.com.

Like Dhaka University’s DUCSU, the last polls to CUCSU were held in 1990.

An all-party students’ panel defeated Islami Chhatra Shibir, the Jamaat-e-Islami’s student front, in the elections that year.

Md Nazim Uddin of Jatiya Chhatra League backed by now defunct BKSAL, was elected vice-president, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front’s Azim Uddin Ahmed general secretary, and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Mahbubur Rahman Shamim assistant general secretary.

Different student organisations have been demanding CUCSU elections for a long time.

The demand peaked when Dhaka University held DUCSU elections on Mar 11 this year.

A committee will be formed to update the decades-old CUCSU polls guidelines, VC Iftekharuddin said.

“The date will be announced after creating an atmosphere favourable to elections,” he added.
