Mohiuddun Rana, a central leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, was among those detained during raids conducted since Thursday night.

Rana, second-year student of physics and assistant secretary of the ruling party's student wing, was detained from the university's Shahidullah Hall on the night before the admission test.

Abdullah Al Mamun, a first-year student of applied chemistry, was detained from Amar Ekushey Hall. A proctorial team found the two with a device that allowed them to communicate with candidates in exam venues.

The authorities say they detained 13 test takers from various exam venues on Friday after interrogating Rana and Mamun.

They all stand accused of using devices with tiny earpieces and bodies that look like bank cards but has slots for inserting SIM card.

The 'Gha'-unit test was held in 86 venues located in and outside the Dhaka University campus. A total 98, 054 students took the test against an availability of 1,610 seats.

"The two students we caught last night are the masterminds of this fraud," said Amzad Ali, acting proctor of the university.

"We have expelled students for life for offences like this in the past. We will take administrative measures this time too," he said.

The 13 candidates caught from the exam venues are Noor Mohammad Mahbub, Md Farhadul Alam, Ishrak Hossain Rafi, Mohammad Abdullah Al Mukin, Rishad Kabir, Md Asadujjaman Minarul, Ishtiaque Ahmed, Joy Kumar Saha, Rezuara Sheikh Shobha, Mashuka Nasrin, Md Torikul Islam, Nasirul Haque Nahid and Mohammad Miraz Ahmed.

The university was preparing to slap them with legal charges.
