Pro-Awami League Blue Panel sweeps Dhaka University Teachers Association election

The Awami League-backed panel has clinched all but one of the executive committee posts in the Dhaka University Teachers Association election.

Farid Uddin Ahmed and ASM Maksud Kamal

The Blue Panel’s Farid Uddin Ahmed and ASM Maksud Kamal have been re-elected president and general secretary, respectively.

The duo will be serving for a third term after Sunday’s election.

Candidates of the ruling party-backed panel have been elected in 14 out of the 15 posts.

The only blip in the results for the pro-government panel was the victory of Lutfor Rahman of the White Panel, supported by the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Left-leaning teachers separated from the pro-Awami League teachers and formed the Pink Panel, only to win no post in the election.

Election Commissioner Prof Sharif Ullah Bhuiyan announced the results in the afternoon after the voting from 10am to 2pm.

According to Bhuiyan, 1,466 of 1,950 members of the association balloted this time.

From the Blue Panel, Prof Md Imdadul Hoque of the botany department got the vice-president post;Associate Professor Neelima Akhter of English got joint secretary and current treasurer Faculty of Business Studies Dean Prof Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam got the same post again.

Those who won member posts are Faculty of Arts Dean Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, Prof Abu Jafar Md Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan of television and film studies, criminology department Chairman Prof Md Ziaur Rahman, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science teacher Prof Md Nizamul Hoque Bhuiyan, Prof Md Rahmat Ullah of law, microbiology department’s Prof Sabita Rezwana Rahman, Prof Md Aftar Ali Sheikh of chemistry, mathematics department’s Associate Professor Chandra Nath Podder and computer science and engineering department’s Associate Professor Lafifa Jamal.

The only defeated candidate from the panel is Prof Md Masudur Rahman of marketing.
