Bangladesh is pursuing a new development model built around a “3-R” strategy of recovery, restoration and rebuilding, Prime Minister’s Finance and Planning Advisor Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir has said.
The strategy focuses on increasing investment, production and employment while expanding public investment in education and healthcare, he said.
Titumir made the remarks as chief guest at the biennial convention of the American Association of Bangladeshi Engineers and Architects in Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday, according to a statement from the planning ministry.
Titumir said the strategy aimed to rebuild an economy weakened under the erstwhile Awami League administration.
The new development model seeks not only to restore economic momentum but also to diversify industries, improve competitiveness and productivity, and expand the use of modern technology to establish Bangladesh as a competitive production hub, Titumir said.
He said the government also aims to turn Bangladesh into a $1 trillion economy by 2034.
Titumir called on Bangladeshi-American engineers, scientists and technology entrepreneurs to contribute to the country’s development.
He said the diaspora could play an important role in building links between Bangladesh and leading US universities, research institutions, technology companies and investors.
Titumir urged expatriate professionals to support young engineers and entrepreneurs, develop international research partnerships with Bangladeshi universities, facilitate technology and knowledge transfer, and help promising local startups gain access to global investment and markets.
“Your knowledge, experience, credibility and professional connections are also an important investment for Bangladesh. Let us turn the personal success of Bangladeshis in the United States into collective possibilities for Bangladesh,” he said.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also outlined the three-R strategy as part of the government’s broader economic programme.
The convention was chaired by the organisation’s president, Monir Zaman.
US Congresswoman Debbie Dingell and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Megan Cavanagh also spoke at the event.
Bangladeshi engineers and architects from different US states attended the convention.
