Bangladesh exports more to India despite strained relations

Bangladesh’s exports to India have increased despite more than two years of diplomatic tensions between the two countries, while imports from India have continued largely unchanged.

According to country-wise export data released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) on Tuesday, Bangladesh exported goods worth $335.2 million to India in July and August, the first two months of the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The figure was 7.67 percent higher than the $311.3 million exported during the same period a year earlier.

The increase was the highest among Bangladesh’s non-traditional or emerging export markets.

The data suggests that diplomatic tensions following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on Aug 5, 2024 have not significantly disrupted bilateral trade.

Bangladesh’s trade deficit with India remains above $12 billion, reflecting the large gap between its exports to and imports from the neighbouring country.

Bangladesh exported goods worth $1.75 billion to India in the 2025-26 fiscal year, compared with $1.76 billion in 2024-25.
