The government has greenlit the purchase of another shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG), a day after clearing eight shipments to combat Bangladesh’s energy crunch.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the deal at an online meeting on Friday, presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
The fuel will be procured from Aramco Trading Singapore under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement, the finance ministry said.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had sanctioned the purchase of eight LNG shipments a day earlier, on Thursday.
Direct purchases without tender require policy approval from the CCEA, as mandated under the Public Procurement Rules (PPR).
At that meeting, the Power Division tabled four proposals, each for two shipments of LNG.
Approval was granted for two shipments apiece from the UK, Australia, Malaysia and Oman.
The energy crunch deepened after Moheshkhali's floating LNG terminal broke down amid the ongoing war in West Asia.
A fire at the Maheshkhali terminal on Jul 21 caused technical problems, forcing the facility to shut down and cutting daily gas supply to the national grid by around 450 million cubic feet.
LNG shipped in by sea is received and stored at floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), before being converted back into gas and dispatched to the national grid via pipeline.
Two floating terminals in Moheshkhali handle this process.
The blaze damaged the power, control systems and instrumentation cables of one terminal, halting operations there for a fortnight.
After completing necessary repairs and restarting the boiler on one unit, the Excelerate Energy-operated terminal resumed limited gas supply in the early hours of Thursday.
