More than two dozen people have been injured in a clash between members of a customer forum and former employees of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC outside the bank’s head office in Dhaka.
The two groups took up positions outside Islami Bank Tower in Motijheel’s Dilkusha on Monday morning to carry out programmes announced the previous day.
Tensions sparked shortly before 10am, when an argument between members of the two groups over their respective demands intensified into a scuffle and then a clash.
Members of the law-enforcing agencies were present at the scene when the two sides became involved in the confrontation.
More than two dozen people from both sides were injured and received treatment at nearby hospitals. No one could immediately provide a precise breakdown of the number injured from either side.
However, Islami Bank Sachetan Grahok Forum claimed that around 25 of its members were injured, including its member secretary Mutasim Billah.
Forum convenor Prof Nur Nabi Manik told reporters that people who had been dismissed from the bank over what he described as “illegal appointments” and were linked to the S Alam Group had attacked the forum’s “pre-planned peaceful programme”.
“We have video footage. Even though Islami Bank customers were dragged away in front of police, the police did not play a neutral role. Rather, they showed bias,” he said.
The activists demanding reinstatement subsequently left the area in front of Islami Bank Tower following the clash.
Tensions persisted in the area after the confrontation, while law enforcement personnel were deployed in a heightened state of alert.
The two sides had faced each other at the bank’s head office the previous day and submitted their own memos to the bank’s management outlining their respective demands.
The activists later left Dilkusha and gathered outside Bangladesh Bank.
