Bangladesh Bank has raised the annual foreign currency limit for overseas travel to $18,000.

Authorised dealer (AD) banks can release the annual quota or its equivalent in foreign currency to adult Bangladeshi citizens for overseas travel in a calendar year, the central bank said on Sunday.

The move accounts for citizens' actual foreign currency needs and the changing requirements of international travel, it added.

Children under 12 remain entitled to 50 percent of the adult limit, while the existing cap on foreign currency issued as physical US dollar notes stays unchanged.

Within the annual quota, individuals can carry up to $5,000 in cash.

Within the annual travel quota, individuals can take up to $5,000 in cash dollar notes.

The central bank expects the higher travel quota to help meet the foreign currency needs of Bangladeshi citizens travelling abroad for tourism, visiting relatives and other permitted purposes.
