A ceremony was organised at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka on Tuesday to mark the launch.
Telecoms and IT Minister Mustafa Jabbar, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Posts and Telecoms Secretary Shyam Sunder Sikder, High Commissioner of Malaysia Nur Ashikin binti Mohd Taib, and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood were present on the occasion.
Jabbar thanked Robi for offering 4G services in district levels at such a short time. He hoped the company will take the services to the remote areas.
He said he would speak to Finance Minister AMA Muhith about cutting the SIM replacement tax to get 4G services, and tax on internet data.
In a media release, Robi said it launched the 4G services minutes after getting the licence on Monday.
Speaking at the launch event, Robi’s Managing Director and CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said, “With greater amount of spectrum compared to our competitors, we are ready to serve the best quality 4G service to our subscribers from this very day.”
Another mobile-phone operator, Banglalink said in a media release it launched 4G in Khulna on Tuesday, making it one of the first regions in the country to go under 4G coverage of the operator.
Banglalink Chief Sales Officer Ritesh Kumar Singh made the announcement at a press conference held at City Inn, Khulna.
The super-fast mobile internet provided by 4G network will enable the users of this region to enjoy zero-buffer HD video streaming, HD quality video calling, high-fidelity music streaming, online gaming, social networking and all sorts of other internet services, according to Banglalink.
Singh said, “We are extremely delighted to bring 4G in Khulna. Khulna has always been an exceptional market for us.”
The release said Banglalink has acquired additional 5 MHz spectrum in 2100 MHz Band and 5.6 MHz spectrum in 1800 MHz Band which will result in seamless digital connectivity and better coverage nationwide.
