“The founders looted the bank. Bangladesh Bank is now taking care of it, it may take some time for the bank to get over from the crisis,” he told journalists at a programme in Sylhet on Thursday.

The minister, however, claimed that no bank had ever fallen apart in Bangladesh.

Muhith made the claim after inaugurating 43rd branch of the Islampur Bangladesh Development Bank in Sylhet. Managing Director Monzur Ahmed presided over the programme.

The Bangladesh Bank sacked Farmers Bank Managing Director AKM Shameem on Tuesday.

Farmers Bank founding Chairman and Awami League leader Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir resigned three weeks ago in the face of the allegations of gross irregularities.

On Jan 13, 2016, the central bank appointed an observer to scrutinise operations of the bank following reports of loan irregularities involving billions of taka.

The special inspection team of the central bank has blamed managing director, deputy managing director and chairman of the executive committee of the bank for the irregularities.
