The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has protested what it described as “abnormal and continuous” price hikes of sugar, LPG, and edible oil.

The CAB has also demanded immediate action against those who are involved in constantly raising the prices.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the consumer rights body accused an “influential network of people” of destabilising the sugar market by controlling its supply and creating an artificial shortage.

The network of people controls the import and production of sugar at factories as well, the CAB statement noted.

“At the same time, prices of LPG, soyabean oil, and palm oil are being raised unreasonably, putting additional pressure on the daily expenses of ordinary people,” the statement added.

Sugar prices were relatively stable just a week ago, the statement said.

However, prices have suddenly increased in the wholesale market, the statement noted.

In the retail market the price of sugar has gone up by Tk 10 per kilogram, it said.
