Trading at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) surged to the highest level this year, buoyed by an uptick in investor activity after the benchmark index crossed the 5,500-point mark.

Turnover reached Tk 14.41 billion at the close of trading on Sunday, up from Tk 13.38 billion the previous session and surpassing the previous high of Tk 12.96 billion set on Sept 3.

The DSE’s key index, the DSEX, rose 17 points to end at 5,636, after touching the 5,650-point mark at one stage. It had last crossed the 5,600 points on Aug 3 before tapering off amid volatile trading.

Daily turnover has consistently topped Tk 10 billion since Aug 24, with the exception of Aug 27. Market capitalisation rose to Tk 7.27 trillion at the close.

Out of 400 issues traded, 248 made gains, 127 declined and 25 were unchanged.

Sector-wise, engineering shares led the turnover chart at Tk 1.57 billion, followed by pharmaceuticals and chemicals at Tk 1.44 billion, and insurance at Tk 1.43 billion.
