Police have allegedly come under attack with machetes while conducting an operation to arrest suspects accused of attempting to seize a building in a land dispute in Dhaka’s Adabor.
During the incident, two people were shot and injured by police. Law enforcers said they opened fire “in self-defence.”
Police have arrested four people.
The incident took place around 2am on Tuesday at a canal near the Nabodoy Housing kitchen market in Adabor, said Adabor Police Station chief Zahidul Islam Jahangir.
He said police had been conducting continuous raids in different areas to arrest those involved. After receiving a tip-off that some of the suspects were near the canal bank, law enforcers went to the location to arrest them.
“At one stage of the operation, we saw seven to eight of the attackers at the scene. When we tried to arrest them, they tried to attack us with the machetes they were carrying.”
“Then, one police officer fired two rounds in self-defence, injuring two people,” he said.
Officer Jahangir said four people, including the two who were injured, had been arrested at the scene.
The arrestees are Rajib Howlader, 30; Sagar alias Chhoto Bigar, 24; Shakib, 23; and Rashed, 24.
Rajib and Sagar sustained gunshot wounds to their legs. They were later detained and taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
“The other suspects fled. Steel machetes, blades and sharp weapons were recovered from them,” the police officer said.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said in a statement that a total of 10 people have been arrested over the attack on a house in Adabor. Police said six of them were arrested on Monday.
On Saturday morning, a group of 20 to 25 people vandalised the gate, windows and CCTV cameras installed for security at a house on Road No. 6 of the first Shyamoli Housing project in Adabor’s Shekhertek area.
Relatives of the building owner alleged that after Aug 5, 2024, a local named Khorshed Alam had taken control of the building in the same way.
After completing legal procedures at various levels involving the court and police, the owners regained possession of the building on Mar 12. The building was attacked again only a few months later.
The owner’s relatives alleged that they called the national emergency service 999 during the attack but did not receive immediate police assistance.
The attack was captured by another CCTV camera, and the footage has since circulated on social media.
In the video, a masked man is initially seen talking on a mobile phone. Later, a group of young men carrying weapons arrive and vandalise three CCTV cameras at the house one after the other. They are then seen striking the windows and the main gate with sharp weapons.
The victim later filed a written complaint with Adabor Police Station. Following the complaint, police said they had arrested 10 people over alleged involvement in the incident so far.
