Dhaka , Jul 01 (bdnews24.com) —The government has transformed Rangpur Municipality to the country's 10th City Corporation as part of an election pledge by the administration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
"Local government Division had published a gazette notification in line with the change on Jun 28 and it took effect from Sunday (Jul 1)," Local Government Division secretary Abu Alam Shahid Khan told bdnews24.com .
According to the law, an election to the newly formed city corporation has to be held within 180 days of publishing the gazette.
"An administrator to the newly formed city corporation will be appointed within seven days," the secretary added.
Upgrading Rangpur Municipality to a City Corporation was an election pledge of the government in which HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party is a key partner. Rangpur is the stronghold of Jatiya Party.
Rangpur residents have long been demanding implementation of the pledge.
They have also been demanding allocations for the corporation in the budget for 2012-2013 fiscal year.
Jatiya Party has also observed a day-long strike at Rangpur with the demand.
