Chittagong, Aug 30 (bdnews24.com)--Prime minister Sheikh Hasina will formally open the Karnaphuli Bridge-3 on Sept 8.
Chittagong deputy commissioner Faiz Ahmed told bdnews24.com she will open it to traffic at 11am on that day.
She will later launch the 150MW-Shikalbaha Power Plant, Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd and the city's new court building, he said.
In addition, she will join a public meeting at Shikalbaha.
Karnaphuli project director Bidhan Chandra Roy told bdnews24.com that the nearby Shah Amanat Bridge will also be opened after the new bridge.
The construction work of the much-awaited bridge began in Aug 2006 and was to be completed last September. But it could not be done because of the delay in construction of the approach road.
The government signed a contract with China Major Engineering Company on July 19, 2006 to construct the bridge.
Roy said the total cost of the bridge was estimated at Tk 5.9 billion, but it took just 3.8 billion to complete the work, saving Tk 2.1 billion.
The length of the bridge four-lane bridge is 950 metres and its breadth is 24.40 metres.
