The former public representative from Katiadi-Pakundia pariliamentary constituency in Kishoreganj passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on Saturday.

His younger son Dr Muzharul Mannan, also a neurologist, told bdnews24.com that his father had been suffering from old-age complications.

He said the Namaj-e-Janaza will be held at Masjide Bakkatil Mubarakah at Kalabagan at 9:15pm on Sunday.

Mannan, a member of ruling Awami League’s Advisory Council, left behind three children – sons Muzharul and Mosud Mannan, and daughter Zeba Mannan.

His elder son Mosud is Bangladesh’s Ambassador in Uzbekistan. Muzharul lives in Singapore and Zeba in London.

An active participant of the 1952 Language Movement, Dr Mannan was the founder of Dr Abdul Mannan Women's College in Katiadi and Neurology Foundation in Dhaka.

He served twice as the president of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.

In this capacity, he was instrumental in gaining the recognition of MBBS degree given by medical colleges (DMC & SSMC) in Bangladesh by the relevant authority in the UK.

He had developed a new medicine to treat Latherism.

His wife Prof Bashira Mannan of the Dhaka University passed away in 2005.

Awami League leader Mannan was elected from Kishoreganj-2 seat twice – in 2001 and 2008.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have both expressed deep shock over Mannan’s demise and extended condolences to his family.

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim and Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain have also mourned Mannan.
