Khulna, Apr 23 (bdnews24.com) – The officer in-charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station, S M Qamruzzaman, and three others were closed on Monday for allegedly beating up an activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student front of opposition BNP, during the party's countrywide general strike on Sunday.
Assistant commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police Shakhawat Hossain told bdnews24.com that the OC was sent to police lines.
The three are constables Abu Sufian and Mamun Akhter and OC's driver 'Shudhangsu'.
Qamruzzaman had allegedly tortured Chhatra Dal activist Mahmud-ul-Haque Tito after hanging from the ceiling. His colleagues allegedly aided him.
The OC, however, denied the allegations, saying Tito and his associate Ferdaus-ur-Rahman Munna were only blindfolded and threatened.
However, photographs of the incident were published in many national dailies on Monday and video clips aired on television channels.
Police had detained them on charges of attacking the police with petrol bombs in the city's Tutpara area.
Shakhawat said sub-inspector of the same police station Kazi Rezaul Karim would oversee the station as the acting chief.
Deputy commissioner Haider Ali is investigating the incident.
BNP, however, demanded termination of the policemen. It also said that the party would also file case against the police officers.
