The Awami League leader was suffering from kidney ailments for long, said Suja's eldest son AS Khaledeen Rashidi Sukarna.

Suja was a three-time MP from Khulna-4 representing Rupsha, Terokhada and Dighalia.

He had also served as general secretary of the Awami League’s district wing. Awami League leaders expressed their condolences over his death.

Suja, who was ill for long, had a kidney transplant in Singapore. He was accorded a reception in Khulna after he returned home following his first round of treatment in the city state.

Suja later fell ill again and was taken to Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital where he died on Thursday night.

Suja was first elected to parliament from Khulna-4 in 1991. He began his political career with Bangladesh Chhatra Union, a leftist student organisation.
