A high-level official confirmed the promotion and appointment of General Waqar to the crucial post on Tuesday.

His appointment will be effective from Nov 30, when his predecessor Lt Gen Mahfzur Rahman ends his tenure.

Commissioned in the East Bengal Regiment of Bangladesh Army in December 1985, Gen Waqar took over as military secretary to the Army Headquarters for the second tenure in March 2017. He had also served as assistant military secretary and deputy military secretary.

During 35 years of an illustrious career, he has attended a number of professional courses both at home and abroad.

He graduated from Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur and also from Joint Services Command and Staff College, UK.

He has completed Master of Defence Studies from Bangladesh and Master of Arts in Defence Studies from the King’s College, University of London.

He has shared his views on ideas in various seminar-symposiums on a number of occasions at home and abroad.

He commanded an infantry battalion, an independent infantry brigade and an infantry division.

Gen Waqar has held various staff appointments in an infantry brigade, School of Infantry and Tactics or SI&T, and in Army Headquarters.

He has also served as an instructor in Non-Commissioned Officer’s Academy, SI&T and Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training or BIPSOT.

The general has participated in two UN Missions - in UNAVEM (Angola) as military observer and in UNMIL (Liberia) as senior operation officer.
