The border force, previously known as Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), had gallantly contributed to the 1971 Liberation War.

It was renamed nearly two years after the Feb 25-26, 2009 mutiny.

Over 50 army officers, including then BDR Director General Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, were killed.

The border watchdog was known as 'Ramgarh Local Battalion' at its inception during the East India Company rule.

On Dec 8, 2010 a bill -- 'Border Guard Bangladesh Bill-2010 -- was pushed through the Parliament.

Then President Md Zillur Rahman signed it into a law on Dec 20 the same year.

Various newspapers started calling the force BGB after the President's approval.

The force's new flag and monogram were unveiled on Jan 23, 2011.
