Authorities at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) have barred a teacher from all academic activities following allegations of sexual harassment made by a student during a departmental study tour.
University Information Officer Md Nazmul Hossain told reporters on Thursday that the disciplinary action was taken against Monirul Islam, a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology.
"According to the decision of the Academic Committee, the teacher has been relieved of all departmental responsibilities, including classes, examinations, and research activities. It has also been decided that he will not be assigned to any future study tours," Nazmul said.
The incident reportedly took place on Apr 22 during a study tour for the 2023-24 academic session.
A female student filed a formal complaint alleging sexual harassment by the lecturer.
The matter gained significant traction on social media, sparking a strong reaction among the general student body, who demanded immediate justice.
In response, the university administration formed a five-member fact-finding committee, which has already completed its initial inquiry.
The administration has now directed the university's "Sexual Harassment Prevention Complaint Committee" to review the findings and submit a final report.
Prof Shireen Nigar, convenor of the complaint committee, said: "We received the relevant documents on Wednesday night. Since the next two days are weekend holidays, we will meet on Sunday to review the files and commence the formal investigation."
Prof Gopal Chandra Ghosh, chairman of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, confirmed that the department's decision has been formally communicated to the central administration.
"The safety and dignity of our students are being given the highest priority," he added.
