Six people including a journalist have been killed in an attack on an Awami League office in Raiganj in Sirajganj amid widespread violence during anti-government protests.
The incident occurred at the office during a meeting on Sunday, according to Upazila Executive Officer Nahid Hasan Khan.
The deceased have been identified as Jahangir Alam, former general secretary of the Raiganj Upazila Chhatra League; Ilyas Hossain, president of the Upazila Swechhasebak League; Al Amin, general secretary of the Upazila Swechhasebak League; Golam Sorwar Ripon, chairman of Brommogacha Union Parishad; Golam Hasnat Titu, general secretary of the same Union AL; and Pradip Kumar Bhowmik, the Upazila correspondent for Daily Khoborpatra.
UNO Nahid said leaders and activists were holding a meeting at the Raiganj Upazila Awami League office in the morning.
At the same time, protesters gathered at the intersection in front of the office.
At one point, the protesters attacked the office and the Raiganj Press Club, severely injuring at least 40 leaders and activists with sticks and sharp weapons, he added.
“The bodies of the six people killed in the attack on the Awami League office are in several hospitals,” he said.
“At least 40 others have been injured and admitted to various hospitals.”
Ratan Kumar, superintendent doctor of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital, said: “Fourteen people have been admitted to the hospital, with seven of them suffering from gunshot wounds.”
The violence was part of a nationwide student-led antigovernment demonstrations.
In Sirajganj, the highest number of casualties has been reported, with a total of 22 deaths across the district.
Attackers set fire to the Enayetpur Police Station and beat at least 13 police personnel to death as they attempted to escape.
The other victims include three leaders of the BNP and its affiliates.
