A fire at a multi-storey residential building in Dhaka’s Katabon has left two people dead.

The blaze erupted at Al-Baraka Tower on Elephant Road and was later brought under control before being fully extinguished, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

It started around 1:05am on Saturday in two flats on the 12th floor of the 14-storey building, said Fire Service control room duty officer Rafi Al Farooq.

The first firefighting unit reached the spot seven minutes after the alert.

Two units from Palashi Barracks Fire Station and four from Siddik Bazar Fire Station joined the effort and brought the flames under control at 3:08am.

Firefighters rescued two people from the building and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

The victims were identified as Johny Mia, 25, and Abdul Salam, 19.

The Fire Service said the blaze was fully tamed at 5:40am.
