Police say a neighbour beat a mother and her daughter to death in Munshiganj’s Sirajdikhan following an argument triggered by “loud music”.

The suspect, Ali Hossain, 28, was arrested nine days after the killings late on Wednesday night at Pakhi Mor near the Gazaria–Daudkandi Bridge, police said.

At a press briefing on Friday, Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Md Minhazul Alam said the murders stemmed from irritation over loud sound from a mobile phone.

“Out of annoyance over the high volume from a mobile phone, he committed the killings. Ali Hossain regularly uses drugs and leads a vagrant life.

The bodies of Amena Begum, 32, and her 8-year-old daughter, identified only as Mariyam, were recovered on the morning of Jan 19 from a rented house at South Rajanagar in Sirajdikhan.

Later, Amena’s mother Monwara Begum started a case against unidentified individuals.

According to police, at one stage of the argument, Ali struck Amena on the head with a wooden stick. When her daughter Mariyam rushed forward, he swung at her too, killing her as well.

Police said Ali, who lived as a tenant in the room next to Amena’s, went missing immediately after the incident.

Although he had lived there for a long time, even the house owner did not have clear information about his proper identity or address.

His identity was later confirmed with the help of technology.

At the briefing, police said Ali had been hiding in Gazaria and Daudkandi since the killings, spending nights in gardens or on school balconies while constantly changing locations.

Police also recovered the stick used in the killings.
